Writing Your Own Permission Slip

Remember when you were little, and the most amazing things in the world only became accessible to you if you could get that permission slip signed? You held it in your hand like the magic key, smiling sweetly at your parent or guardian and offering to do the dishes while you were cleaning your room. Pleeeease you asked, and that feeling of your fate in the hands of another became another note in the music of your future.

As each of us entered into adulthood we rebelled in small (or large) ways. Some of us licked the peanut butter off our knives or ate dessert for dinner. Some turned to alcohol or drugs. Others shacked up with whoever shared their zeal for the horizontal mambo. We waved our flags, however large or small, and celebrated adulthood – but many of us including myself forgot one of the BEST parts of being a grown up. We forgot that we can now sign our OWN permission slips!

Now yes, I mean giving yourself a pass to go to Disneyworld or France or pole dancing classes, but larger than that I mean giving yourself permission to be strong, proud, bold… We as children have relied on the habit of looking up to someone we love in expectation for so long that we never stopped to think that perhaps it was ourselves we needed to love and look up to at this point! Oh my gosh! Think about what you are capable of, and then think about looking forward to it with childish excitement. Don’t wait for your husband or boyfriend or whoever to tell you your dreams are valid. If they are yours, THEY ARE VALID! Sign yourself up!

Why am I preaching this right now? Because I’m just reconnecting with it myself. I’m having that AHAH moment and I feel compelled to share. I am mustering the emotional strength to take my life back from everyone I have surrendered it to, while at the same time watching others surrender theirs to whoever around them wishes to be the puppet master of their futures. The more I am willing to face the fear that I may be labeled as a bitch, the more horrified I am by the possibility of NOT being one. The stronger I become, the less appealing the idea of loving others more than I love myself becomes.

There is a book I have been reading that I would like to share with everyone. It is called The Motivation Manifesto by Brendon Burchard. I am not normally one to plug books – especially the self-help variety – but this man has sincerely altered my life. Rather than waving his pom poms in the air and pointing you skyward, he explains in plain English all of the things you already know but have gotten too lazy and complacent to really HEAR. Most importantly, he explains that you are your best friend and worst enemy, the only one coming between you and your goals, and the creator of each excuse, success or indecision that has kept you where you are. It is a sobering experience, but if you are ready it can fuel a fire within you like you haven’t seen since Big Wheels were your mode of transportation.

I challenge you to grab your accountability, put on your big girl panties and rock your life. Day one starts today.
